ResurFX Fractional Laser: Frequently Asked Questions

  • Lumenis’ M22 ResurFX fractional device is a non-ablative, 1565nm wavelength fractional laser used to rejuvenate the skin at a cellular level, allowing us to target sun damage, uneven tone, rough texture and fine lines.

Non-ablative fractional lasers are a minimally invasive method of removing the superficial layers of damaged or wrinkled skin via a specialized technique that “fractionates laser light”. This means that only some of the skin is treated with each laser pulse. This allows the intervening or unaffected skin cells to regenerate more rapidly resulting in faster healing time and more predictable outcomes.

The treatment stimulates the skin to produce more collagen, resulting in skin tightening and improved overall texture and complexion.

Unlike Fraxel, which is also a non-ablative fractional laser, Resurfx requires only one pass, allowing for a much more comfortable procedure with a shorter downtime.

  • Before treatment, you will have a consultation with Dr. Aivaz to discuss your concerns and desired outcomes. During this consultation, Dr. Aivaz will examine you and ask questions about your medical history to ensure you are a candidate for treatment.

During the treatment, the skin is cleaned and prepped. A medical-grade topical anesthetic is used to numb the skin. Pain is minimal and you may feel a warm, prickling sensation as the skin is treated.

After ResurFX laser skin resurfacing, the recovery time is short and relatively comfortable. Redness, swelling, and minor irritation similar to a mild sunburn may develop, but these effects typically subside in 5-7 days. Sun exposure before and after treatment should be avoided and a sunscreen with SPF of 30 or higher should be worn daily.

The appointment can take anywhere from 20-40 minutes, depending on the area that’s being treated.

  • Patients typically need 3-5 treatments, performed monthly.

  • Laser procedures have an excellent safety record in Dr. Aivaz’s hands. Adverse effects, such as pigmentation and scarring, are exceedingly rare.

  • Yes! It can be combined with LaseMD (similar to the FraxelDual). This combination will help improve skin tone and texture as well as pigmentation.

Resurfx can also be combined with IPL to create a photofractional treatment which allows us to target brown and red pigmentation and broken blood vessels while also improving fine lines, wrinkles, and skin tone/texture.
