Laser Hair Reduction: Frequently Asked Questions

  • Areas that can be treated include, but are not limited to:

    • Face (including the upper lip and chin)

    • Beard line up

    • Back

    • Legs

    • Genital skin

    • Bikini line

    • Underarms

    • Nipples

It is possible to treat unwanted hair in nearly any area, except the eyelid or surrounding area. Skin with tattoos should not be treated.

  • Laser hair removal can be performed on all skin types and colors, as long as there is a contrast between your skin and hair color. Depending on how many treatments you receive, most of the treated hair can be removed.

The laser targets pigment in the hair follicle and for this reason, gray, white and red hair rarely respond to treatment.

  • Before treatment, you will have a consultation with Dr. Aivaz to discuss your concerns and desired outcomes. During this consultation, Dr. Aivaz will examine you and ask questions about your medical history to ensure you are a candidate for treatment.

During treatment, the area will be cleaned and prepped for the procedure. Cool air will be used to make the treatment as comfortable as possible. While most patients do not need numbing, topical medical-grade anesthetic can be used should you desire.

The laser is passed over the treatment area, and most patients describe a feeling of heat and/or a rubber band snapping on the skin. The appointment can take anywhere from 5-60 minutes, depending on the area that’s being treated.

After treatment, the treated area may temporarily appear mildly red or swollen. It is important to note that hair can be shaved or trimmed, but should not be waxed, plucked, or tweezed before treatment.

  • Depending on the treated area, anywhere between 8-12 sessions are needed. Treatments are spaced every 4-8 weeks. Maintenance treatments might be needed as well.

  • Laser procedures have an excellent safety record in Dr. Aivaz’s hands. Laser hair removal is safe for all skin types and Dr. Aivaz chooses laser settings very carefully to minimize risk of serious side effects such as skin pigmentation or scarring.
