Fillers: Frequently Asked Questions

  • Fillers are a soft, jelly-like substance composed of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule that naturally occurs in the human body, and it is found in our skin. The main function of hyaluronic acid is to hydrate and add volume to the skin.

By replacing the hyaluronic acid that is lost over time due to aging and sun exposure, fillers can create lift, add volume, soften fine lines and wrinkles and restore a more youthful appearance to areas of the face that show signs of aging.

The dermal fillers consisting of hyaluronic acid that Dr. Aivaz uses include Restylane, Juvederm, RHA, and Belotero. Hyaluronic acid is often favored over other filler substances because it can be dissolved (with an enzyme called hyaluronidase) should there be a need to do so.

  • Before treatment, you will have a consultation with Dr. Aivaz to discuss your concerns, desired outcomes, and personal philosophies on aesthetic treatments. During this consultation, Dr. Aivaz will ask questions about your medical history to ensure you are a candidate for treatment. She will then perform a facial analysis and create a treatment plan custom-tailored to your needs.

During treatment, the area will be cleaned and prepped for the procedure. Should you desire, a topical medical-grade anesthetic will be used to numb the area. Then, a precise amount of filler will be injected beneath the skin. The appointment can take anywhere from 15-60 minutes, depending on the area that is being treated.

  • Fillers produce results that are visible almost immediately. Results last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years, depending on a number of factors including the patient’s age, area treated, type of filler used, quantity of filler used, and lifestyle.

  • Most patients experience only mild discomfort. A local medical-grade anesthetic cream can be applied to the skin prior to the treatment for a more comfortable experience. Many of our fillers are also formulated with lidocaine to help minimize discomfort. Additionally, Dr. Aivaz often employs the microcannula technique which can also minimize discomfort.

  • Most activities can be resumed after treatment, though it is recommended to avoid exercise and using make-up for 24 hours after the procedure. Additionally, there is a small risk of temporary bruising or swelling so it is best not to schedule a filler appointment just before a social engagement.

  • Absolutely! Dr. Aivaz’s personal philosophy on aesthetic treatments is to make her patients look very natural. Fillers are not meant to create totally different features–simply to create a beautiful, youthful, natural outcome. Her goal is to turn back the hands of time to make you look like a better version of yourself!

  • The choice of filler depends on the individual patient, their treatment goals, age, and specific facial anatomy. No single filler is ideal for all purposes or locations of the face. I recommend booking a consultation to discuss your goals with Dr. Aivaz.

  • Facial treatment with fillers is a true art form, and the results of a filler treatment depend largely on the skill of the person performing that procedure. Dr. Aivaz is a board-certified dermatologist, with extensive education on facial anatomy and aesthetic treatments, and expertise in performing filler treatment. Her expertise in injection and the care she takes to ensure she understands each individual’s goals and desired outcomes leaves her patients feeling very happy with their cosmetic outcomes.
