Botox for Hyperhidrosis: Frequently Asked Questions

  • Botox works by blocking the signals that stimulate your body to produce sweat.

When body temperature rises, the body automatically cools itself by making sweat. In people with hyperhidrosis, however, the nerves that signal the sweat glands are overactive and these individuals sweat even when their body temperature is normal.

When Botox is injected directly into the area of your body that commonly sweats, it decreases the activity of the overactive nerves. When your nerves can’t signal your sweat glands, you don’t sweat. This in turn can help with elimination of body odor, minimized sweat stains on clothing, and can improve confidence.

  • Before treatment, you will have a consultation with Dr. Aivaz to discuss your concerns and desired outcomes. During this consultation Dr. Aivaz will ask questions about your medical history to ensure you are a candidate for treatment. She will then perform a facial analysis and create a treatment plan custom-tailored to your needs.

During the procedure, your skin will be cleaned and prepped. Professional strength numbing cream and ice packs will be used to anesthetize the area. A tiny needle is used to inject the Botox into the treatment area. The procedure takes anywhere from 5-15 minutes depending on how many areas are being treated, and patients can go about their normal routines afterwards. We do recommend staying upright for 4 hours after the procedure and waiting for 12 hours before resuming aerobic exercise.

  • Results may start to be seen around 7-10 days, and full effect is typically seen 14 days after the procedure. Results typically last 3-6 months.

  • Avoid the following to the treatment area for 24 hours:

    • Massage

    • Facials

    • Microdermabrasion

    • Waxing, tweezing

    • Vigorous washing of the area

    • Strenuous exercise is not recommended for 12 hours after treatment and putting your head in an upside down position is not recommended for 4 hours.

    • You can apply your cosmetics, moisturizer, or lotion using very light pressure.

  • Botox has an excellent safety record in Dr. Aivaz’s hands. Ice packs and professional strength numbing cream make the procedure virtually painless. Redness that resolves within an hour and temporary bruising are possible.
