Sclerotherapy: Frequently Asked Questions

  • Varicose veins (also known as spider veins) are caused by weak or damaged valves in the veins and their development may also be related to hormonal changes, genetics, and frequent standing.

Sclerotherapy is an FDA-approved treatment for removing varicose veins. Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution directly into the unwanted veins. The solution causes the vein walls to seal shut, stopping the flow of blood. As a result, the vein collapses and fades within a few weeks.

  • Before treatment, you will have a consultation with Dr. Aivaz to discuss your concerns and desired outcomes. During this consultation, Dr. Aivaz will examine you and ask questions about your medical history to ensure you are a candidate for treatment. She will then create a treatment plan custom-tailored to your needs.

During treatment, the area will be cleaned and prepped for the procedure. Sclerotherapy does not require anesthesia. A solution called Asclera (also known as polidocanol) will be injected directly into the targeted vein with a fine needle. The procedure has minimal discomfort. The appointment can take anywhere from 20-60 minutes, depending on the area that’s being treated and number of veins present.

After treatment, the treated area may temporarily appear mildly red or swollen, and there may be temporary bruising. Dr. Aivaz will recommend that you wear compression stockings 24/7 for 48 hours after sclerotherapy to help with healing and decrease swelling. After 48 hours, you will need to wear your compression stockings during your waking hours for 2 weeks. You will be told where you can buy them before your procedure. The compression hose will help diminish side effects and improve the outcome of your treatment.

  • Dr. Aivaz recommends a minimum of three treatments, spaced monthly. Patients likely will need touch-up treatments every 1-3 years.

  • Sclerotherapy has an excellent safety record in Dr. Aivaz’s hands. Side effects such as hyperpigmentation and small ulcers are rare in Dr. Aivaz’s experienced hands.
