What Are Neurotoxin Treatments?

Neurotoxin treatments involve injections of a carefully prepared formula into target areas to reduce signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles, improve certain symptoms, and address functional concerns. While the cosmetic benefits (smoothing out wrinkles) are the most commonly known use for this treatment, neurotoxins can also reduce symptoms such as jaw pain, teeth grinding, and excessive sweating.

How Do Neurotoxin Treatments Work?

Whatever your goal may be with neurotoxin treatment, the mechanism of action is roughly the same. The active ingredient in the injections dampens the activity of the nerves and muscles at the injection site. This gently but effectively leads to improvements in the targeted concerns, whether it be wrinkles or muscle-related pain.

Our Neurotoxin Treatment Options

  • Wrinkle Removal: The most popular use for neurotoxin is to smooth out wrinkles in vulnerable areas. Typically, injections are done in the forehead, eyes, lips, and other facial areas to minimize movement and smooth away wrinkles. The muscles are relaxed naturally so they cannot pull the skin into wrinkle-forming expressions.
  • Jawline Slimming: Relaxing the masseter muscle can allow for gentle yet striking jawline slimming. Over time, the jaw muscle should continue to decrease in size due to its continued relaxation.
  • Jaw Pain: Neurotoxin is ideal for treating jaw pain caused by muscle tension, such as TMJ disorders and bruxism. Patients should see a reduction in symptoms such as headaches, jaw pain, teeth grinding, teeth clenching, and jaw tightness.
  • Hyperhidrosis: Also known as excessive sweating, hyperhidrosis typically responds quickly and thoroughly to neurotoxin infections. The injection turns off the sweat glands in the affected area, reducing overall sweating.

What Is a Neurotoxin Treatment Session Like?

Expect a quick visit with little to no pain. While numbing is not necessary, we can apply a topical cream to make the injections painless. A typical treatment will consist of several injections in a row, carefully placed to generate the maximum effect in as few injections as possible. A single visit should take less than 30 minutes, though many patients enjoy combining treatments in a single visit, such as having injections in one area and laser treatments in another to get the most out of a session.

Neurotoxin Treatment Results

The duration of neurotoxin treatment results can vary and depends on the reason for the injection. However, in all cases, the body naturally breaks down the components of the injections, which means the active effects will fade after about 3-6 months. However, the duration of benefits can be longer than that, depending on the type of treatment.

What to Know About Results

  • Neurotoxin remains most active for about 3 to 6 months. Following this, touchup treatments may be needed to maintain cosmetic results.
  • Hyperhidrosis benefits can last between 7 and 12 months, after which you may need a touchup treatment.
  • Jaw pain benefits can last about 6 months, but regular treatment may train the muscles to remain looser even beyond the therapeutic duration of neurotoxin.
  • Jawline slimming results can also be longer-lasting, as the relaxed muscles may stay slimmer even after the treatment wears off.

  • Glabella (more commonly known as the ‘elevens’ or the area between the eyebrows)
  • Crow’s feet (skin around the eyes)

Before treatment, you will have a consultation with Dr. Aivaz to discuss your concerns, desired outcomes, and personal philosophies on aesthetic treatments. During this consultation Dr. Aivaz will ask questions about your medical history to ensure you are a candidate for treatment. She will then perform a facial analysis and create a treatment plan custom-tailored to your needs.

During the procedure, your skin will be cleaned and prepped. Most patients do not require numbing cream, but it is available should you wish to use it. A tiny needle is used to inject the Neurotoxin into the treatment area. The procedure takes anywhere from 5-15 minutes depending on how many areas are being treated, and patients can go about their normal routines afterwards. We do recommend staying upright for 4 hours after the procedure and waiting for 12 hours before resuming aerobic exercise.

Results may start to be seen around 7-10 days, and full effect is typically seen 14 days after the procedure. The effects of treatment typically wear off after 3 months.

Avoid the following to the treatment area for 24 hours:

  • Massage
  • Facials
  • Microdermabrasion
  • Waxing, tweezing
  • Vigorous washing of the area
  • Strenuous exercise is not recommended for 12 hours after treatment and putting your head in an upside down position is not recommended for 4 hours.
  • You can apply your cosmetics, moisturizer, or lotion using very light pressure.

Neurotoxin has an excellent safety record in Dr. Aivaz’s hands. Ice packs and professional strength numbing cream make the procedure virtually painless. Redness that resolves within an hour and temporary bruising are possible. Rare and temporary side effects include headache, double vision, eyebrow asymmetry, or eyelid droop.
