What Is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing uses a thermal, energy-based device to naturally enhance skin quality and treat a range of cosmetic concerns. Non-ablative fractional lasers are a minimally invasive method of removing the superficial layers of damaged or wrinkled skin via a specialized technique that “fractionates” laser light. This means that only some of the skin is treated with each laser pulse. This allows the intervening or unaffected skin cells to regenerate more rapidly, resulting in faster healing time and more predictable outcomes.

The treatment stimulates the skin to produce more collagen, resulting in skin tightening and improved overall texture and complexion.

Some of the main concerns it can treat include:
  • Visible veins
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Acne and acne scarring
  • Skin discoloration (sun spots, age spots, freckles)
  • Mild skin laxity
  • Uneven skin tone or texture
  • And more

Featured Laser: Lumenis ResurFX Laser

Lumenis’ Resurfx TM device is a non-ablative, 1565nm wavelength fractional laser used to rejuvenate the skin at a cellular level, allowing for correction of sun damage, uneven tone, rough texture and fine lines.

How Does It Work?

When exposed to specific amounts of heat, the collagen in skin cells naturally tightens. This has the immediate effect of producing firmer skin. Beyond this initial reaction, the cells then begin synthesizing new collagen, which further enhances skin quality. As skin turnover occurs, these healthier cells continue to model collagen. Eventually, scars and skin hyperpigmentation will fade, leaving you with even-textured, healthier skin!

Is Laser Skin Resurfacing Right for Me?

Choosing the right skin treatment is crucial to seeing the outcomes you want. Dr. Aivaz takes the time to consult with each patient comprehensively and evaluate the condition of their skin. She walks patients through available options, and provides clear information about the benefits and limitations of each treatment. Non-ablative techniques can be used on a wider range of patients due to the gentler approach.

Non-ablative skin resurfacing works best for candidates who:
  • Have no current skin infections or conditions (e.g., active eczema flare-up).
  • Have mild to moderate cosmetic concerns.
  • Want to avoid invasive or surgical options.
  • Want to “prejuvenate” their skin before signs of aging appear.

What Does a ResurFX Fractional Laser Session Entail?

We begin by applying a topical anesthetic to the treatment areas, which further enhances patient comfort. Dr. Aivaz then moves methodically and precisely through your treatment plan. During the treatment, the skin is cleaned and prepped. A medical-grade topical anesthetic is used to numb the skin. Pain is minimal, and you may feel a warm, prickling sensation as the skin is treated. The treatment requires only a single pass over each area, which avoids overly irritating the skin. You can expect a mild experience with minimal discomfort. Most patients report having no issue with how the laser feels as it delivers energy to their skin.

Your Results

Your initial results can start to appear after the initial healing period. The upper layer of skin will flake off, revealing healthier skin beneath. However, this flaking is much milder and shorter than with ablative lasers. Patients will have a mild rosy glow for several weeks after treatment as their skin continues to respond. As collagen production continues, your skin should show notable improvements in the coming weeks. We recommend scheduling each treatment session 4 weeks apart to give your skin an optimal amount of time to heal.
