What Is Kybella?

Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable treatment designed to reduce or eliminate submental fat. In other words, it is a non-surgical double chin treatment. Research has shown that it consistently produces results patients love while remaining a safe and mild treatment. Rather than relying on invasive methods, this double chin removal method uses only a series of mild injections to achieve dramatic results.

How Does It Treat a Double Chin?

The efficacy of Kybella comes from its unique formula of synthetic deoxycholic acid. This substance occurs naturally in the body and is designed specifically to break down fats. When injected into the submental area, it does precisely that. Once the fat has been broken down, the body’s natural responses carry away the material, leaving a slimmed-down area.

What Is a Double Chin Treatment Session Like?

Double chin removal is one of the most convenient treatments available. The injections themselves take only about 15 to 20 minutes to complete during your visit. Dr. Aivaz is a medical expert and approaches each treatment with the same high standard of care, improving patient comfort and safety regardless of their treatment.
Treatment Process Overview
  • Step 1: Prepare the area. Dr. Aivaz may use a numbing cream to minimize pain before injecting.
  • Step 2: The injections: A treatment usually involves a rapid succession of about 20 to 30 injections into the submental area.
  • Step 3: Return after about 6 weeks to continue with your treatment plan. Between 2 and 6 sessions are usually the ideal regimen.

Does Non-Surgical Double Chin Treatment Have a Recovery Period?

Kybella injections tend to result in a mild recovery process. Some discomfort, swelling, bruising, or numbness are all within the normal range of side effects. Typically, these remain mild and will resolve within about 1–2 weeks.
In most cases, the recovery process does not interfere with your daily routine, though some patients may prefer to take some time off from work until the swelling or redness fully fades.

Double Chin Removal Results

One of the key advantages of Kybella is that it can potentially provide permanent double chin removal. The way the synthetic deoxycholic acid interacts with the fat cells usually prevents them from being able to store fat in the future. So not only will the results be visible, but they should continue to be so for potentially a lifetime.
What to Know About Results
  • While results are long-lasting, significant weight fluctuations can still alter the treatment area’s appearance.
  • Completing the full regimen is typically essential to seeing results that meet expectations.
  • Allow 6 weeks between sessions before returning for your next series of injections.
  • A small subset of patients will not respond to treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Kybella is a non-surgical injectable that permanently dissolves fat. Kybella is composed of deoxycholic acid, a bile acid that is naturally occurring in the human gallbladder, which is used by our body to break down fat during digestion. When Kybella is injected into the treatment area, it allows for the destruction of fat cells. These fat cells are then cleared out of the treatment area by our lymphatic system and excreted as waste. This results in permanent reduction of fat in the treatment area.
Areas that can be treated include, but are not limited to:
  • Double chin (also known as submental fat)
  • Bra rolls
  • Axillary fat (fat in front of the armpit)
  • Banana rolls under the buttocks
  • Fat around the knees
  • Small areas of stomach fat
  • Lipomas

Before treatment, you will have a consultation with Dr. Aivaz to discuss your concerns and desired outcomes. During this consultation, Dr. Aivaz will ask questions about your medical history to ensure you are a candidate for treatment. She will then perform a complete analysis and create a treatment plan custom-tailored to your needs. The number of sessions depends on a variety of factors, such as amount of fat present, the area being treated, and overall goal of the treatment.

During treatment, the area will be cleaned and prepped for the procedure. Ice packs and cool air will also be used to make you as comfortable as possible.

The area to be treated is marked out and the Kybella is introduced into the skin. The procedure will take anywhere between 10-20 minutes and there will be a warm, tingling sensation in the treatment area for 1-2 hours after treatment. Temporary bruising is common, and should not last more than 7-10 days. Typically, the treatment area is swollen for 2-4 weeks after the procedure.

Typically 3-6 sessions are needed, spaced every 8 weeks.
Adverse effects, such as temporary numbness, are exceedingly rare and unlikely to occur in experienced hands.

Results are seen six to eight weeks after the first injection, though it may take 3-6 injection sessions to see final results.

Results are permanent as long as weight stays stable. If a patient gains weight, he/she may require touch-up Kybella treatments.
